Social Media Networking

The Importance of Social Media Networking for the Home Inspector

People in the home inspector business may not have a lot of time for doing the kinds of social networking that they may hear about from others. Not all inspectors have a Facebook page that they update and probably not that many tweet on a Twitter account. In fact many home inspectors who read this article are not even sure what those things are all about, and they probably use their computers and the Internet for business or technical research but not so much for hanging out and making friends. That’s perfectly understandable.

But it is important to realize that many of your customers and potential customers are using social media networking and this kind of interactive Internet technology, and they aren’t just using it to chat with friends, follow celebrities, or try to become a celebrity. Most inspectors are surprised to learn, for example, that those who use the Internet on a regular basis for such things as shopping and researching products and services is growing across all age groups – including both Baby Boomers and senior citizens. Meantime people are connecting through all sorts of online media, and they use these social media networks to get such things as word of mouth referrals for contractors, real estate agents, and yes – home inspection professionals.

But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Those who know how to harness the power that social media networking represents can use computer programs, Internet search technologies, and online networking strategies to generate a phenomenal amount of business. Partner with someone like that whose specialty happens to be aligned with yours – like a homeowner network, a website devoted to the inspection profession, or a real estate related social media group – and you can suddenly gain high exposure to a vast number of people in your own local community.

The flip side of all of this is also worthy of consideration, too, because if you are not at all involved with social media in promoting your business then your competitors who are will have a huge advantage. They will be making connections and inroads 24/7, because the Internet never sleeps and people log on to it at all hours of the day and night. So while you’re contemplating whether or not to print some fliers or run an ad on radio or in the newspaper they are fielding calls and emails from people who found out about them via computer.

You do not have to be interested in social media networking, in other words, for it to have great importance and influence over your inspection business. Some inspectors have a knack for it and use it all the time, both personally and for their businesses. Others don’t even have a clue how it works, but they know that it has value so they partner with people who can help them take full advantage of it in an affordable and effortless way. It doesn’t really matter which category you fall into or identify with, as long as you are savvy enough to realize that this is the 21st century, the information age, and the era of social media technology. Otherwise you run the risk of landing in category three – those who have no business presence in the world of social media and who are therefore left standing on the sidelines while their competitors power ahead with greater success and more rewarding financial results.
